Planning 10: Skills vs Enlightenment?

Do you think it's more important to learn skills while you are in school (like how to build tables or solve quadratic equations or draw contours on a map) or is it more important to think about who you are, what life is about, and how you fit into the world? Where does knowldege fit in to all of this -- do you have to have knowledge to develop skills or find enlightenment? What's school for, anyways?

More important to think about who you are an where you fit in instead of learning. We can learn alot if we know who we are and where we fit in so it is important to discover that first.

hey Thielmann,
Nice blog I think it is more important to learn skills in school

I think that it is more important to do what you want while in school. I don`t beleive that you need knowledge to do anything. With will comes it all.
School is for learing stuff you wouldn`t learn on your own. Thats why most people don`t like school.

A little of both is important, if your super smart but don't have any social skills thats bad. Or if your really sociable but as dumb as a box of rocks thats bad to. and u need skills to find enlightment.

Hello teacher person! I think its important for people to learn but I also think that people need to know how to get along with other people, since life IS a personality contest. I think that you can definately gain some useful skills in highschool and if you don't finish highschool you can't move on to higher education.

I think that it is important to learn skills in school but only ones that u think are importtant for u. We should get to choose what we take and not have to take socials if we dont want to learn how to draw contour lines.

hey mr.t. i think it is important to have some of both. You need to have some knowledge to get you through life but you also have to know what life is about and who you are.

Both areas are important as one needs to know about themselves and what they want from life but without the practical skills they won't go very far.

I think both of them are important to a certain extent. School is needed to develop skills in order to be successful in the future and with employment. Also, it is good not to be so focused on work and academics that you don't really know what you want to do and are unsure of who you are.

I think that it is important to do both but more to think about who you are, what life is about and how you fit into the world. I believe that if you really want to excel in something you will have or gain the knowlegde to develop the skills to do this. The problem with school right now is that we have so much to learn and most of it will be useless to us in our future. That is why most students don't do their homework and don't even try to learn. They don't see the point of it. I think classes should focus more on interacting with your peers, doing oral presnetations, lots of debates and disscusions and less tests and reports and stuff like that. I believe that you, as an individual, will go far in life if you know what you want and know how you communicate with others rather than if you are super smart and all you know is how to calculate pythagoras.

I think the purpose of school is to prepare yourself for a career. I think thinking about who you are, what life is about, and how to fit into the world are questions you have to ask yourself inorder to determine your career path. Once you have determined your career path then you have to educate yourself to prepare for it. This is where school comes in.

Life skills.........financial skills.........career choices...........history is good, but I did not need it after school was over. Math, for sure!

hey, i think that learning skills like math and stuff, and learning who you are and how you fit into this world are equally important it, you cant go very far without the stuff you learn in school, and you cant go very far without a sense of self....

Knowledge is very good to have in life.. yet finding yourself is number one. Not knowing who you are, and your past and family tree, and where you come from, may hold you down in life.. People look at life at what they need, not what they have, and thats wrong. Look around and look at all the people that have less than you or are different, and you make fun of them to make yourself feel better. You should be the bigger person, and stand up for them. Finding youself, should always come first, and knowledge will always be there to learn!
